It is indeed a very serious observation, we need to take it for all possible evaluation of our school education system. First thing, politics is spoiling our school education, hence, educated politians should be appointed as education ministers. Secondly, in general, there is no commitment that is no sincerity and responsibility on the part of teachers, especially working in government and aided schools. In fact they earn a good salary comparing to other states. I thing these two things need to be taken care of.

 1. Government Order to make the children Pass until 8th std is the root cause of this evil - so without understanding the basics, children get thru' - If this is the case, how the teachers will do their best even if some of them are dedicated to their profession? 2. Teaching Tamil is not done properly now a days - when we studied, we did not find Tamil difficult - but now, students find Tamil difficult compared to English - they are not able to relate the sound with the letters - the reason being, students are not encouraged to read in Tamil classes. 3. In language classes ( English, Tamil, other languages ), students must be encouraged to read and do simple writing exercises - by this, they will be able to relate the alphabets with sounds and get familiar with the words.

Education – a tool to make robots or for all round development of human being?

”unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them

Is what Lord Macaulay said to the British govt to conquer India and YES they destroyed our “Gurukula Education System”, indeed we almost lost out self-esteem and we became what they wanted. But the more pitiable thing is that we are still in the same state and getting quite comfortable with it even after knowing the faults in this system. What does the current education system brings to us? Does it bring developments in the physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and ethical integration of the individual? So what’s the aim of our current education system?

Excessive homework, intimidating impositions, bossy teachers, and their harsh measures crush the tender children at the budding stage itself. Even maths sums, their methods that need to come out spontaneously, are memorised. About 10 year back when I was in school, different ways to solve problems/sums were thought but now sums and it steps are just being memorised like as they are Tamil poets (Seyyul). Their brain is totally exhausted with nothing left, except the imposed knowledge that is transient. The child's originality and all-round development are being nipped in the bud. Unless the commercialism is delinked from education, the capacity to think usually dies when a child goes to the present day schools.

Parents have a major share in this. Any school that imposes and insists on immoderate workload and incarcerates their students for a maximum number of hours is reckoned as an ideal institution.

It has to be appreciated that the modern Indian parent does have a very hard time, for modern Indian life itself has become much more difficult than it ever used to be. Surrounded by a plethora of potential threats and fears, they keep their children on track for those dreaded twin events — board exams and entrance exams. If all of their free time is taken up with tuitions and coaching classes for entrance exams, they are obviously compelled to channelise all their emotional energies in only one direction — the pursuit of academic achievements. However, by failing to realise that the brain, a truly extraordinary organ though a sadly underutilised one, requires a much wider range of activities to develop and strengthen it's millions of neural pathways, this approach inadvertently results in one-dimensional thought processes and early burn-outs since their brains have been trained to memorise but not necessarily think. However much you increase the RAM, you can't expect your Intel processor to function as effectively as its counterpart.

The current educational system is that it turned men into slaves, capable of slavery and nothing else. It deprived people of their faith and belief. Swami Vivekananda was very critical about this scheme of education. “He compared it to the person who wanted to turn his ass into a horse, was advised to thrash the ass in order to achieve this transformation and killed his ass in this process.” The excessive stress and untold agony caused by these schools will mar their mental growth. If this situation continues, we should cope with the hard reality that we are creating not the pillars of India but robots that oblige their masters. This is what Lord Macaulay achieved and sadly still achieving it…!!!

What to do? Our children should get attuned to the competitive world is the conviction of the literate as well as illiterate parents.

Swami Vivekananda points out that “the defect of the present-day education is that it has no definite goal to pursue. A sculptor has a clear idea about what he wants to shape out of the marble block; similarly, a painter knows what he is going to paint. But a teacher, he says, has no clear idea about the goal of his teaching”. The present education system has overemphasized the cultivation of the intellect at the cost of the general well-being of humanity. This disastrous trend should be arrested by encouraging all round development of human being.

Then here you pose a question, what do you mean by all round development? Education must provide ‘life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas’ the ideal of this type of education would be to produce an integrated person – one who has learned how to improve his intellect, purify his emotions, and stand firm on moral virtues and unselfishness. To illuminate and refine the mind is the real goal of education, and not the mere collection of data.

Play and activity are part and parcel of juvenile life. “You will be nearer to Heaven through football than through the study of the Gita” says Swami Vivekananda. Nowadays parents are planning to send their young kid to so called Pre-KG's at 2.5 to 3 years of age, (mostly to get free from taking care of their own kid and also to an extent socialise their kids in this busy world) think again!!! It’s not like our PAAL VAADI's where Playing, activities, experience, and social interaction were the main aspects of learning. We went their, to learn new words not to memorise and to repeat!!! So one has to think again, does your kid should really need to go to pre-KGs and KSs at the age of 3?? Why this kolaveri?

Much of Indian discovery and learning can be attributed to the metaphysical "gurukul" system of education, which encouraged observation, questioning, dialogue, investigation, respect for teachers and the environment. Learning through mistakes is one of the main basic principles followed in Gurukula system and PAAL VAADI not to punish them or impart the fear of losing by the grading systems as it’s followed in the current education system. The child should be allowed to commit mistakes in the process of character formation. He will learn much by his mistakes. In 1623 itself Europeans realised that our method of schooling was considered as unique and the best among all. Errors are the stepping stones to our progress in character. Strong will, is the sign of great character. Will-power is necessary not only to conduct the learning process, but also to strengthen one’s character.

The education which does not help the common mass of people to equip themselves for the struggle for life, which does not bring out strength of character, a spirit of humanitarianism, and the courage to stand on ones own legs – is it worth the name?

The educational concerns related to a person’s interaction with society should receive due attention. In past we were bound to learn from our own village or at least with in our cultural territory, which was good enough to impart our traditional knowledge. In other words we didn’t require special teachings or guidance to learn our traditional cultural practices, like praying and carrying out our eternal duties to your forefathers but unfortunately in present days, those became foolish things to do. Like these our cultural identities should be thought in the current system.

Every society has its outer aspect called ‘civilization’, and also its inner aspect called ‘culture’. In both of these a child is molded and educated so that the beliefs and practices of his forefathers are carried on and not forgotten. Similarly, through education should make a child to learn a culture and his behaviour is molded accordingly, and he is thus guided towards his eventual role in society. In this process, several agents – such as his parents, peers and teachers are there JUST TO ASSIST him. The child should be HELPED in solving his problems himself but not to be teached /forced to overcome a problem. You cannot teach a child any more than you can grow a plant. You can supply the growing seed with the materials for the making up of its body, bringing to it the earth, the water, the air that it wants. And there your work stops. It will take all that it wants by its own nature. So with the education of a child. We have only to do so much for the child that they may learn to apply their own intellect to the proper use of their hands, legs, ears and eyes. The teacher spoils everything by thinking that he is teaching. This is the thing that has to be changed. (Watch the recent Dhoni movie – it has the similar principle – don’t force, let them grow on their own.)

The aim of education should be self-development, therefore, leads to the aim of education for character. Character is the foundation for self development. So the aim of education is character building. This depends upon the ideals cherished by the individual. The educator should present high ideals before the educands. The best way to develop a character is the personal example of high character set by the teacher. In ancient Indian system of education, the teachers used to present high ideals before the pupils, who in their turn imitated these ideals according to their capacities. Thus, in order to be worthwhile and effective, education must be rooted in religion or, to be precise, in the science of spirituality, and evidently not in dogma. A mere intellectual growth wont make a man complete, it only makes men ten times more selfish. When there is conflict between the heart and the brain, let the heart be followed. (Most of you might have watched/seen it via movies like 3 Idiots/Nanban).

The end of all education, all training, should be man-making not robots which does the work efficiently without thinking. But all we want is the training/system, by which the current and expression of will are brought under control and become fruitful, is called and should be called as education. But if the current system continues, the words of Nobel Laureate Alexis Carrel will become true "Every child is a genius only to be converted into an idiot in school! “

In the end I would like to share an article from The Hindu magazine, where Mr. Sukumaran C. V. shared his own experience, its much like Dhoni movie. The tyranny of the kindergarten – http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/open-page/article2860901.ece

Why Kerala leads in Organic farming research and adoption than Tamil nadu?

Kerala and Tamil nadu were leading states for rice production with own bio diversities and culture. Agricultural universities of both state lead the rice research in both region.

Recently developed RKMP (Rice Knowledge Management Portal ) reveals the research perspective of both universities on their respective rice ecosystems.

Rice ecosystems of Kerala is classified purely based on agroecosystem. It almost coincides with the agro-climatic zones of Kerala.

But, in Tamil nadu the ecosystems were just classified in to upland, semidry and lowland ecosystem. The soil types and the agroecology was not at all considered in tamil nadu while classifying the ecosystems of rice. However, there are rice research stations in Tamilnadu located widely in all agro-climatic zones. The varieties were released in its name ASD, CO, TRY, ADT, TKM, PMK, MDU, etc.

The classification of the rice eco-systems were just based on water availability and elevation (irrigated and rainfed) in Tamil nadu. The regional and climatic factors were not given importance here. But, Kerala takes topography, soil and abiotic factors and variation in resource endowments, and reckoning the seasonal differences in which rice for classifying them.

This basic narrow understanding of the agroecology, by research institutes of Tamil nadu and in contrast the deeper understanding of the ecology in Kerala rice research makes Kerala to march forward quickly in organic farming than Tamil nadu. Tamil nadu farmers have realized this and so they march forward in conserving the traditional seeds and its cultivation.

Such a limited understanding is applied in research and how would we expect the fruitful outcomes from those institutes in Tamil nadu. Only the genetic resources which is available in respective region were able to produce fruitful results for Tamil nadu rice research institutes. The scientific understanding, importantly the holistic understanding is lacking with them

Kerala Rice ecosystems

Tamil nadu Rice ecosystems

Taking into consideration topography, soil and abiotic factors and variation in resource endowments, and reckoning the seasonal differences in which rice is grown in the state, eight significant agro-ecosystems are identified as detailed below

a. Midland and Malayorum ecosystems - The most predominant system is the viruppu-mundakan sequence practiced on irruppu niloms covering the midlands and the malayoram agro-ecological zone. Viruppu crop on these lands is largely a rainfed crop grown during the South West Monsoon. Generally starting as a dry broadcast crop it ends up in wet conditions. The varieties grown have such plasticity that they are conditioned to growth under a wide spectrum of moisture regimes from moist seedbed to standing water. Mundakan (winter) crop is generally a transplanted crop (Broadcasting with sprouted seed is also practised especially where water is assured) in which rice plant grows throughout under continuous wet conditions. The fag end of the crop might be subjected to moisture stress in some areas if the northeast monsoon tapers off suddenly. Most of the growing period is spent during the northeast monsoon rainfall.
b. Palakkadu plains and Chittoor black soil agro-ecosystem.
Another major chunk of double-cropped land is the irrigated project commands  predominantly the eastern taluks of Palakkadu and Periyar valley command in the Ernakulam district. Prior to the commissioning of the irrigation projects, these were the traditional iruppu and oruppu lands. The main difference between the rainfed and the irrigated practice is that in the latter the viruppu season commences only after the onset of the southwest monsoon (in June) and crop is established through transplanting instead of dry broadcasting. The crop is of medium duration. Commencement of mundakan season is delayed to October-November and continues to be a transplanted crop. Longer duration varieties are preferred under the irrigated system.
c. Kuttanadu agro-ecosystem
A unique system of rice production is practiced in the rice bowl of the state: the Kuttanadu in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts and kole land in Thrissur district. Being low-lying estuarine lands, these areas are subjected to floods during the two monsoons and salinity intrusion during post monsoon periods. Soon after the northeast monsoon ends in November, bunds (dykes) are raised. Pumping out the water drains these ‘polders,’ sowing is then done wet with sprouted seeds. The growing period is midway between mundakan and summer. Sown in November- December, the crop is harvested in March - April. As the fields are generally below sea level, water from the bordering canal system is drawn by gravity flow and used for irrigation. In some parts an additional crop is taken during autumn or virippu which is sown dry broadcast or wet sown just prior to the onset of monsoon.
d.Pokkali agro-ecosystem
In areas that are subjected to tidal action and hence the soil is saline, a crop of rice is grown during viruppu taking advantage of the heavy southwest monsoon by a system of flushing out the salt from the land. The system is known as pokkali in central Kerala and kaipaatu in north Kerala. After the harvest of the virippu crop, prawn culture is practiced making use of the tidal flow during the ebb and floods.
e. Onattukara agro-eco system
Here two crops of paddy is raised followed by pulse crop or oil seeds. Both the paddy crops – Virippu and Mundakan are purely rainfed crops. The soil is sandy textured. It extends in Alappuzha & Quilon districts.
f. High range agro-ecosystem
The low temperature regime generally prevailing in the high ranges limits the time available for rice production in this area. Only one crop extending to both the southwest and the northwest monsoons is practicable. Paddy production in the high ranges is mainly taking place in the Wayanad plateau where the valley bottoms are relatively broad and extensive. Predominantly it is transplanted crop, commencing in July and harvested in December.

The rice crop is cultivated both under irrigated and rainfed ecosystem. The upland rice are bunded rainfed or subsequently irrigated.

(a) Upland
Rainfed and semidry.

(b) Rainfed
The crop is raised with direct seeding either by broadcasting or sowing behind the country plough or gorru. The crop is depending entirely on the monsoon rain.

(c) Semidry
The dry seeds are sown either pre or post-monsoon depending on rainfall received or
predicted. Later the crop is irrigated when the tanks get filled up with rains and water is received through canals.

Low land
They are bunded and irrigated, either by river water or tank water. Transplanting is the common practice. However, direct seeding of wet sprouted seeds with the help of drum seeder is slowly getting popular.

Rationality Vs Spirituality Part 2 Lord Shiva rescued Lady Martin's husband in Afghanistan

Lord Shiva rescued Lady Martin's husband in Afghanistan

-Based on the book "Yog-Yatra 4" of Sant Shri Asaramji Ashram In 1879, when there was British Rule in India, Lt. Col. Martin of Agar Malva was leading the army in the war against Afghanistan.

Col. Martin used to regularly send messages of his well-being to his wife. The war continued for long & Lady Martin stopped getting messages. She was very upset. Once riding on her horse, she pbutted by the temple of Baijnath Mahadev. She was attracted to the sound of Conch & Mantra. She went inside & came to know that the Brahmanas were worshipping Lord Shiva. They saw her sad face & asked her problem. She explained everything to them. They told her that Lord Shiva listens to the prayers of devotees & takes them out of difficult situations in no time. With the advice of the Brahmanas she started the "Laghurudri Anushtthan" of the Mantra: "Om Namah Shivaya" for 11 days. She prayed to Lord Shiva that if her husband reaches home safely, then she would get the temple renovated.

On the last of the "Laghurudri" a messenger came & gave a letter to her. Her husbang had written: "I was regularly sending messages to you from the battle grounds but suddenly the Patthans surrounded us from all sides. We were entrapped in a situation where there was no scope of escaping rest. Suddenly I saw a Yogi of India with long hair, carrying a weapon with three pointers (Trishul). His personality was amazing & he was maneuvering his  weapon with a magnificent style. Seeing this great man, the Patthans started running back. With his
grace our bad times turned into moments of victory. This was possible only because of that man of India wearing a lion skin & carrying a three-pointer weapon (Trishul). That great Yogi told me that I should not worry & that he had come to rescue me because he was very pleased with my wife's prayers."

Tears of joy were falling down the eyes of Lady Martin's eyes while reading the letter. Her heart was overwhelmed. She fell into the feet of Lord Shiva's statue & burst in tears.

After a few weeks Col. Martin returned. Lady Martin narrated the whole incident to him. Now both husband & wife became devotees of Lord Shiva. In 1883 they donated Rs. 15,000-- for renovating the temple. The information engraved slab for the same is still there in the Baijnath Mahadev Temple of Agar Malva. This is the only Hindu temple built by Britishers.

When Lady Martin left for Europe she said that they would make Shiva Temple at their home & pray to Him till the end of life. The same Supreme Power is present in Lord Shiva... Lord Krishna... Mother Durga... Self-Realized Sadguru... One only needs strong faith. Prahlad, Dhruva, Aaruni, Upmanyu & several others could attain that
which appeared impossible to others. Even today devotees are getting this kind of help from God & Self-Realized saints. It is strong faith alone that makes it possible...

AP farmers go on 'Crop holiday'
The state's rice bowl is left empty
Prashanth Chintala / Hyderabad Sep 27, 2011, 00:51 IST

An unviable minimum support price (MSP) for rice has forced farmers in Andhra Pradesh to leave their lands fallow. The movement is spreading to other states.
“Farming never pays” is a familiar slogan among agriculturists across the world, and especially so in India. Nevertheless, many continue to cultivate their fields year after year, barely eking out an existence, toiling in the hope that the tide may turn in their favour one of these days.

However, in the richly fertile regions of East Godavari, things have come to a head. Konaseema, comprising sixteen fertile mandals is often called the rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh—but it may have to change that sobriquet soon since 40,000 farmers in thirteen out of the sixteen mandals have not cultivated their land this year. This means that 85,050 acres of paddy producing fields are lying fallow, ensuring that the 500,000 tonnes of rice produced last year is not going to be repeated. Following Konaseema farmers, over 3,000 paddy growers of Karamchedu mandal in Prakasam district, also known for rice production, have declared a crop holiday. Many of these are marginal farmers with landholdings of less than 5 acres.

According to Secretary General of Consortium of Indian Farmers Association (CIFA) P Chengal Reddy, this is only the beginning. The movement is going to spread across the country if the Union government does not announce remunerative prices for farmers. “It has already spread to other districts like Nellore, Kadapa and Warangal in the state,” he says.

This apart, Reddy said, farmers associations affiliated to the consortium in AP, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra have passed resolutions to observe ‘crop holiday’ on a massive scale in the next season if the Centre declines to accept the minimum support price (MSP) calculated by them (they call it ‘farmers price’). There are 350 farmer’s organisations under the consortium's fold across the country and similar resolutions are planned to be adopted in other states.
Why are these farmers resorting to such an extraordinary and extreme decision?
There are nearly a dozen reasons for this situation, according to a report by the Mohan Kanda committee that was constituted by the AP government to identify the circumstances that led to the declaration of crop holiday by farmers and to propose remedial measures.

More than any other reason, the MSP declared by the government seems to be the one thing that has enraged farmers the most. Even if you consider the estimates of the AP agricultural department, the cost of production of a quintal of paddy in Konaseema works out to Rs 1,583. Now, the MSP for paddy announced by the government for 2011-12 was Rs 1,110. This has meant a loss of Rs 473 a quintal and nearly Rs 10,000 per acre (the average yield per acre is estimated at 21 quintal).

WHY ‘FARMING NEVER PAYS.’
* 40,000 farmers in thirteen out of the sixteen mandals in Konaseema, East Godavari have not cultivated their land this year
* 85,050 acres of paddy lie fallow, not producing the 500,000 tonnes of rice that it provided the country last year
* Farmers’ associations in AP, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra will also go on ‘crop holiday’ next season if the Centre doesn’t address pricing issues
* The main problem is unviable minimum support price (MSP), fixed on the advice of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP)
* CACP computes average cost of production across states to calculate MSP which is problematic since costs vary dramatically from state to state
* There are also vast differences in the cost of other inputs, such as land which in Konaseema is over Rs 5 lakh an acre but Rs 1 lakh elsewhere
* Shortage of labour is also a major issue where schemes like NREGA compete in a fertile area where there is no problem in finding work
* The fifth report of the National Commission on Farmers prepared under Swaminathan says that cost of production was higher than MSP for 12 crops,, including rice and wheat
* The report says that MSP should be regarded as the bottom line for procurement. Purchase by government should be MSP plus cost escalation

The MSP is fixed on the advise of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) and the commission's estimates seem to be at variance with the actual cost being incurred by the farmers in Andhra. “CACP calculations are based on three-year-old data. Besides, it takes the average cost of production in various states right from Assam to AP,” says Reddy, explaining the reasons for the variation.

This is a problematic technique. In a vast and diversified country like India, the costs of production varies in different states. For instance, according to the Ministry of Employment’s Labour Bureau, the average daily wage rate for a male agricultural labourer in AP was Rs 98.31 in December 2008, but went up to Rs 137.95 and Rs 176.29 in of 2009 and 2010 respectively. During the same period, the average wage rate was Rs 81.19, Rs 96.40 and Rs 114.10 in Assam, Rs 61.33, Rs 69.79 and Rs 84.43 in Madhya Pradesh while it was as much as Rs 220.27, Rs 250.79 and Rs 319.13 in Kerala.

Not just labour—there are also vast differences in the cost of other inputs. For example, the cost of land in Konaseema is over Rs 5 lakh an acre whereas it could be less than Rs 1 lakh in other states, or even in other regions or districts in the same state. As a result, the fixed cost of production varies from state to state, and from region to region within the same state.

Besides escalating costs, shortage of labour is also stated to be a major issue. During paddy transplantation, which usually lasts about a fortnight, large number of labourers are required. But, thanks to NREGP, it has become increasingly difficult to get the required number of labour.
To overcome labour shortage, farmers are switching to horticultural crops which are not labour intensive. However, the option is not available to wet land owners in Konaseema and Karamchedu. Their land is ideal for growing paddy but not suitable for horticultural crops.

The CIFA made several presentations to the Centre including the Prime Minister, Agriculture Minister and the Planning Commission’s Vice Chairman, asking for a remunerative MSP but to no avail. Left with no recourse, on September 5, 2011, the CIFA executive committee met in New Delhi and adopted a resolution rejecting the MSP declared by the government for the year 2011-12.

At the same meeting, it adopted another resolution urging the Centre to declare an MSP of Rs 2,400 a quintal of paddy, which it called the ‘farmers price’. CIFA’s MSP includes the estimated cost of production of Rs 1,600 plus Rs 800 as the farmer's "take home income" as per the recommendations of the National Commission on Farmers headed by noted agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan.

Besides adopting the above resolutions, CIFA also filed a petition in the Supreme Court urging the apex court to direct the Union government to implement the National Policy for Farmers-2007, framed by the Ministry of Agriculture on the basis of the recommendations of the MS Swaminathan commission.

Meanwhile, according to the fifth report of the National Commission on Farmers prepared under the chairmanship of Swaminathan, the profitability in agriculture declined by 14.2 per cent during the 1990s due to stagnancy in yield growth and rise in input prices outpacing the increase in prices of the output. The report said that the cost of production was invariably higher than the minimum support price in the case of 12 crops including rice and wheat. The other crops were jowar, maize, bajra, ragi, tur, moong, urd, gram and barley. "It would be extremely unlikely that in long run farmers would continue to cultivate those crops where the C2 costs (cultivation costs) are not recovered,” the report stated.

According to the report, MSP should be regarded as the bottom line for procurement both by government and private traders. Purchase by government should be MSP plus cost escalation since the announcement of MSP. The commission also recommended that the MSP should be at least 50 per cent more than the cost of production. It also said that CACP should be an autonomous statutory organisation and should become an important policy instrument for safeguarding the survival of farmers and farming.

Terming NREGA as a “vote catching, populist scheme”, Chengal Reddy asked, "Where is the need for introducing NREGA in delta areas like that of Krishna, Godavari, Cauvery, Tungabhadra and Punjab?" According to him, there is enough work for people in the agricultural sector in these areas and there is no need of NREGA, which is leading to shortage of agricultural labour and escalation of cost of production.

On the other hand, Union Minister for Rural Development, Jairam Ramesh, had been eloquent about the effect of NREGA in addressing unemployment in rural areas. When it was brought to his notice that the scheme had an adverse impact on agricultural operations and some farmers were observing crop holiday, the minister said he was “open to suggestions” in this regard.
ITC Agri & IT businesses group head S Sivakumar said it was time that we came out with long-term solutions. “The formula we have used for the past 30 years can’t be used in the next 10 years,” he said adding that we were currently in a situation where the food inflation was very high while there was no steep rise in the output prices for farmers.

He said that long-term solutions include raising productivity of both crops as well as labour, reducing transaction costs between farmer and the consumer and encouragement of private sector participation on a large scale for which the regulatory framework has to be changed.
Until then, one of India’s most fecund rice bowls will remain empty.

Farmers' union threatens six-month farming holiday
NEW DELHI, October 19, 2011 GARGI PARSAI
Want government to take note of rising prices and acquisition of farm land for commercial purposes
The members of Bhartiya Kisan Union on Tuesday threatened to take a six-month holiday every year for 10 years from framing if the government fails to take note of the hardship faced by farmers over rising prices and acquisition of farm land for commercial activity.
Rakesh Tikait of Uttar Pradesh said with increasing input costs, farmers were finding it difficult to cultivate round the year. “If the government does not pay attention, we will be forced to take a six-month holiday every year and the government will be responsible for jeopardising food security.”
The farmers, who held a demonstration here, demanded strong State support for small and marginal growers and food producers, as well as a decent social security in villages. The farmers came from several States including, Tamil nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. Women farmers also participated.
In their memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the farm leaders charged the United Progressive Alliance government with promoting policies of runaway industrialisation, privatisation and urbanisation at a time when the country was facing climate threat and increasing hunger. “The land needed to produce food is increasingly turning into elite housing complexes and shopping malls and other profitable ventures.”
Economic liberalisation
Protesting the over 30 Free Trade Agreements that have being signed, the farmers said they will hold “grave consequences” for rural producers. Between 1995 and 2010, about 2.5 lakh farmers had committed suicide due to unjust policies, they alleged. Expressing their solidarity with protests against unfair anti-people policies of economic liberalisation, they sought pro-people, democratic and economically-just policies.
Bemoaning the increasing cost of cultivation, they sought a minimum support price of Rs. 2250 per quintal for wheat, Rs. 2200 per quintal for paddy and Rs. 5000 per quintal for sugarcane.
Their other demands included, support for turmeric farmers, direct fertiliser subsidy to farmers, separate policy for dry-land farming, comprehensive crop insurance and medical insurance for farmers and their families, education facilities in rural areas, ban on private seed company, research in public agricultural universities, and a ban on Biotechnology Regulation Authority as it was perceived to be a “clearing house” for genetically modified organisms.
